Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to be a member to shop at the coop?
No, not at all - many of our regular customers are not members. All are
welcome.
Why become a member?
There are many reasons you might choose to become a member.
Members receive an annual patronage dividend (profit share)
Discounts for working members
As a working member, you also have a voice in the running of the store.
Getting more involved in the coop can mean learning about where your food comes
from, learning about agricultural issues that effect your family and community
and meeting lots of folks who are working to make practical, positive change in
our environment and health.
Is the coop more expensive than a regular store?
Not really. It depends on the types of foods you buy. If you buy a lot of
processed foods with the emphasis on convenience, then you may pay more. If you
eat more whole foods, that you prepare at home, then you will pay less to shop
at the coop. The coop becomes even more competitive if you become a working
member and get a discount.
Two of our members wrote an article for the newsletter
which compared pricing and convenience at the coop versus those qualities at a
discount warehouse grocery. You can read it here... their findings might surprise you...

How do I shop at the Co-op?
Many new customers come through the co-op each month. For some people, the
first time shopping at a co-op can be confusing. Here are some tips to help
you with your shopping experience.
- Prices: Pick up a clip board and pencil at the check-out counter to
keep track of prices and PLUs. For bakery items, you will need the price. For
bulk items, you will need the PLU (price look up). In the produce section,
note the price and whether it is sold by the pound or by the item.
- Containers: You are welcome to bring your own for bulk shopping.
Otherwise, you may purchase plastic bags and containers at the co-op. Scoops
and funnels are available in the bulk section to help you fill your
containers. (There is also a broom for spills!) Remember to weigh your
container before filling it.
- When you get to the checkout counter: If you are a member, please have
your member card ready! If you are not a member, there is no need to feel
guilty. You will not hear us on your radio saying, "You shop here every day;
please help us pay for this fine service." You are always welcome at Hampden
Park Co-op.
- If you need help or have a question, please feel free to ask.
