Mayfest follow-up

Thank you to all the people who volunteered their time for the Mayfest weekend. The plant tenders and mini-fair volunteers bravely endured bone-chilling temperatures, and the cashiers deftly worked their way through a mind-boggling list of plant prices. Your contributions are very much appreciated!

After adding up the number of Mayfest weekends that have been cold, rainy, or both, we are looking at a change in format for next year, with more focus on indoor sales and food-sampling.

Mayfest

This year's Mayfest plant sale is scheduled for May 7, 8, and 9, with a mini-fair on Saturday, May 8. We will need many volunteers to help with plants, cashiering, food sampling, and much more. You can sign up on the member bulletin board in the entryway.

Introduction to the Member Bulletin Board

Most of you have seen the member bulletin board in the entryway. It's the very large one that's full of calendars. Here's a review of what you will find on that bulletin board:

2010 Member Cards

If you are a volunteer and have not yet picked up your 2010 wallet card or filled out a new Rolodex card, please do so soon. If you have questions, or there is something wrong with your cards, drop me a note in the Membership Coordinator envelope in the entryway.

If you are a shareholder or senior and your card is getting frayed around the edges, or you’ve lost your card, fill out a new card request form (available at register 1, or ask any staff person). Drop the form in the Membership Coordinator envelope, and new cards will be made for you.

There have been many changes at our co-op during the past year. Our store has expanded, and everyone is enjoying the added space and the new products we are now able to carry. We bought the building that we’ve rented space in for so many years, which means we now have a firm control over our future, but we also have mortgage payments.

Helen DuFault has retired after many years as general manager (don’t worry, you can still find her in the kitchen four days a week!). We have hired a new general manager, Matt Hass, whom many of you have met in the produce section.

Welcome, New Members One fine evening in May, Hampden Park Co-op sponsored a dance to celebrate the opening of our new space and the arrival of gardening weather. On the dance floor on the second floor of the co-op building, 60–70 people danced to Light of the Moon, led through intricate moves by caller Tom van Deusen.

During and after the dance, the word “community” surfaced, as in “the importance of....” I looked it up, correctly guessing that “community” has a dozen definitions. One particularly grabbed my attention: a community is “...an interacting population of various kinds of individuals (as species) in a common location.”

Well, we made it! Our new section is up and running. A huge thank you to the many volunteers who scrubbed stoves and sinks, painted, moved heavy equipment, restocked shelves, cleaned the floor, provided laughter and encouragement, and much, much more. You have just seen a volunteer co-op in action. Things don’t always go quite according to plan, but things get done, and they get done willingly and cheerfully.
