News From the General Manager

by Kari Neathery

Thanks to you we had several record-breaking sales days around the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons. It was wonderful to see the full parking lot and the crowded store.

We still have a good selection of hats, gloves, mittens, and socks for this nippy weather, below zero as I write. Take heart, we have ordered plants for the May Day sale, in preparation for warm weather that is sure to come.

We are very excited to welcome our new first-floor tenants, the Vienna Community Arts School. The school is a non-profit, family-run educational organization made up of professional musicians and educators. Vienna Arts is operated by Hampden Park Co-op members Herbert Engelmayer and Nancy Sogabe.

Greetings From the General Manager

My name is Kari Neathery. As the new general manager I would like to let you know that I am excited to be here and am really enjoying my first days at the co-op. Our great staff and volunteers are doing a wonderful job of teaching me all about their jobs. Thanks to all of you who have patiently taken the time to help me learn.

I would like to keep you informed on changes that are happening at the Hampden Park Cooperative.

In an effort to build a more efficient and sustainable organization, HPC management is assembling a new business plan to guide our organization into the future. A few of the operational elements of this plan include:

At Hampden Park Co-op we are using this cold and snowy winter to work on some projects for the store that we hope you will enjoy.

We had an excellent annual meeting on October 17th. Many familiar faces and some new faces as well. Many people seemed to like the move to an October date instead of a November date.

Signs for our future

As you come to the co-op, you have probably noticed that the exterior of the building has a new look. There is a new tile mosaic on the north side of the building that was crafted by co-op member Susan Warner. Reading "Your Neighborhood Co-op" and blended with a wonderful array of images, the mosaic reminds me what of I value about our little neighborhood co-op.

Mayfest

What a difference a month has made! We have gone from walls of snow to bare ground and beautiful spring weather. You will notice in the store that we have seeds and bulbs for planting, and of course the Mayfest plant sale is approaching fast.

The date for the sale will be the weekend of May 7th – 9th. Coldhardy seedlings will be delivered to the store the last week in April, with the rest of the plants arriving the week of Mayfest. As in past years, we will have a fair outside on Saturday. There will be different local vendors offering food samples, the neighborhood community council, music, and the Hampden Park Co-op board of directors.

Mayfest

Winter always seems to bring strong opinions out from folks; people either love it or hate it. If you are in the latter camp, it should be good news to you that we have already ordered our plants for the Mayfest sale. Surely spring can’t be that far away!

Quarterly Inventory

New Year’s Eve we had our second try at quarterly inventory. It was harder to line up volunteers, but we got a crew to come in, and finished everything aside from a few odds and ends. We are still fine tuning our process, but we are becoming more comfortable with this change in our operations. A big “THANK YOU” to everyone who came in to help out.

The co-op has certainly had a monumental year. We have completed a store expansion and successfully bought our building! Thanks to all of the members and employees who have supported us through these huge transitions.

In the coming months we will be working to enhance your co-op “experience.” We continue to adjust the layout of the store to best fit the needs of our shoppers. As we move along, we will be labeling aisles, creating a store map, and making it easier to identify our volunteers and staff. Look soon for a member comment/request area in the front of the store, where you can give us your comments, questions, and product requests. We will post responses and gain a better understanding of how to keep improving our store.
